Heatwave at Sea: Battling 40°C Below Deck on the Qingdao

Two days into the exhilarating sailing race from Fremantle to Airlie Beach, our vessel, the Qingdao, faced an unexpected challenge. Below deck, the temperature soared to a scorching 40 degrees Celsius, turning the confined space into a sweltering sauna.

As beads of sweat trickled down our faces, the once-spirited crew found themselves grappling with the intense heat. In the relentless battle against both wind and waves, the sweltering conditions below deck added an unexpected layer of adversity.

The Hydration Paradox: Drinking 4-5 Liters a Day, but Where's the Pee?

Due to the permanent heat outside under the sun as well inside the boat, I embraced the habit of guzzling down 4-5 litres of water daily. Aiming to stay well hydrated, I expected to see the bathroom more often. However, to my surprise, my body seemed to absorb the hydration like a sponge, leaving me wondering how much I was sweating.

PRO TIP: When you share a bunk with somebody, get yourself a waterproof mattress protector if you don't want to sleep in your mate's sweat.
