Klas Abrahamsson - Qingdao's Sailmaker

As the Qingdao sailed through the vast expanse of the world's oceans, it was inevitable that sails would be damaged and need repairing. Klas Abrahamsson emerged as the unsung hero of the team. His story unfolded not only in the rhythm of the waves but also in the delicate stitches that mended the sails, making him an indispensable part of the crew.

When a spinnaker is blown, it is replaced by a smaller, heavier sail. The downtime and sailing with a much smaller sail cost lots of miles, so it is important to be able to repair them as quickly as possible. His story unfolded not only in the rhythm of the waves but also in the delicate stitches that mended the sails, making him an indispensable part of the crew.

Word of Klas's prowess spread throughout the sailing community. Other teams marvelled at the resilience of the Qingdao, attributing their success not just to speed but to the meticulous care provided by their sail maestro. Klas, however, remained humble, attributing his skills to the unpredictable nature of the sea and the love he felt for the art of sailing.

His hands, calloused from countless repairs, moved with a rhythm born from years of experience. As the sails fluttered back to life, the crew felt a surge of gratitude for their unsung sail-whisperer. Klas didn't just fix sails; he patched up spirits and instilled a sense of confidence in the face of adversity.

Here, you see an interview during the race just a few days after leaving Cape Town. This was his easiest sail repair so far.

The Interview was held on the 23rd of November, 2023
